In 2018, the City of Bellingham concluded a residential improvement project to the Birchwood neighborhood. This is a remarkably diverse area and it was important for the artwork to connect to the rich local cultures. Two parts of the overall project were sidewalk inlays celebrating the flora and fauna native to the area (the most northern part of Washington State, bordering Canada, near the Salish Sea.) One of these is a mandala with a spring theme and featuring Birch Trees, placed adjacent to Birchwood Avenue. The other mandala is in a fall theme with Maple Trees, and is on Maplewood Ave. On the other side of the street, on the route most local kids walk to school, are three vertical stanchions representing gardens with flowers growing, and local kids drew their self-portraits for the flowers. This took place during a weekend event the previous summer (2017) and they also drew other critters that are found in a garden. I faithfully rendered their drawings as closely as possible to the originals using glass mosaic.
