Back in 2019, I had the opportunity to participate in a Home & Garden Expo in Portland. My main goal was to connect with designers, builders and home owners, but I thought it would be a good idea to offer some items for sale. So, I created a display of concrete stepping stones with glass tile mosaic designs. The designs are colorful and bold, mostly in radiating, mandala configurations. The style developed out of a need for efficiency, to stay within an affordable price point. By making use of the colorful recycled glass tiles and repetitive patterns, I can complete a 12″ stepping stone within a few hours. The bright, colorful glass designs are a great accent in the garden, especially when foliage dies back. Over the past year, I’ve sold quite a few stepping stones, and they have been a fun project to work on between commissions.

If you are a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, please know that I’m teaching my technique in a workshop for the upcoming virtual conference.

During this workshop, I’ll share my technique for making durable, aesthetically pleasing stepping stones on pavers you can buy from a hardware store. Additionally, I’ll be sharing information about creating exterior mosaic for any climate. This class will equip students to create all types of projects, from small scale garden art, like the class project, to larger projects like benches, patios, retaining walls and murals, using direct method. (I won’t be getting into indirect method or working on mesh in this workshop.) More information is on the SAMA website and you can find it in the education listings when you sign up for the American Mosaic Summit. http://americanmosaic.org/
