Here’s the video tutorial showing how to create a butterfly for the mural: https://youtu.be/JHJY6bdMqK8

Information for participants:

Here’s what you need to create a mosaic butterfly for the Metamorphosis mural:

Alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh

High quality thinset (I use Platinum 254 or Titanium 257) (*If you use Custom Build or Mapei, please use the admix instead of water)

A small container for mixing thinset (dixie cup or single-serve yogurt container is good)

Weatherproof materials (Stained glass, glass tiles, high-fired ceramic, stone…)

Tools for cutting materials (different for each material)A tool for mixing and spreading thinset

A template: You can draw it yourself or find a butterfly shape online. Adult coloring pages are a good resource if you don’t have drawing skills.

Clear plastic.

A flat board or thick cardboard

Painters tape

High quality grout of your choice

Container for mixing grout (16 oz is usually about right)

bucket of water for clean-up

Grout spreading tool (I like a spatula)

rubber gloves

dust mask

Grout sponge

Lint-free rag

Packing material for shipping.

Optional: protective eyewear

*I can sell you a kit with 3 s.f. of mesh, a 16 oz container of Platinum 254 thinset, a 16 oz container of Laticrete Permacolor grout base, grout tint (I have a selection of colors available), A small grout sponge, and wheeled glass nippers. This kit is $50, including flat rate shipping. If you already have some of these items, I can customize and recalculate for you. Just email me at jennifer@jkmosaic.com and I can invoice you through paypal or square. If you are local to me, you are welcome to take a trip to my studio to pick up your items (with Covid precautions.) In that case, I will add some stained glass pieces.

Butterflies can be any size: just consider shipping challenges. If you need a template, I would suggest googling “free stained glass butterfly pattern” because there are many. Another option is “free butterfly coloring page.” You can use just the outline and simplify the lines in the wings. If you have some drawing skill, here’s what I do: fold white paper in half and draw half of a butterfly, then flip it and put it in a window. Trace the design to the other half of the paper, and you’ll have a symmetrical butterfly. You can also do an asymmetrical design. (Please keep political and overtly religious messages out of the design. We want everyone to feel welcome in the maze.)
