As my commission schedule has become consistently jam-packed, you may have noticed I’m offering fewer in-person mosaic workshops. For everyone who has been waiting and wondering when the next class will be, I offer my sincere apologies. My first love is architecturally-integrated, large-scale mosaic, and I am pinching myself that I have been booked solid for the better part of the year for a while now, leaving little time for teaching.

In my shop, you can find one informal online workshop that walks you through a GOG mosaic candleholder project, including an intro to glass scoring. When you purchase the class, I send you a link to a private YouTube video that shows, step-by-step, how to complete the project. There is a separate listing in my shop for a kit with the main items you need to make 2 candleholders, while supplies last. The fact is, assembling and shipping the kits is more than I have time for, so once I run out of supplies, I don’t plan to re-stock, but the video will still be available, and I’ll send you a supply list and written instructions.

The other option for instruction from me is to enroll in my courses through Mosaic Arts Online. This has become a way for me to share what I know with a broader audience at a more affordable rate. I’ve had a couple of questions about the fee structure, so I wrote a blog post recently explaining how online courses work for me and for the platform: https://jenniferkuhnsmosaic.blogspot.com/2021/10/the-cost-of-learning-to-mosaic.html

I just finished listening to a podcast with Tami Macala, owner of Mosaic Arts Online, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning new creative techniques. Tami also recently launched Create Arts Online, and listening to the podcast made me wish I had more time to spend learning about all of the different mediums and techniques available on these platforms. But, I have enough trouble staying focused as it is. I hope someday I can just stop for a year (or 10) and play again! I’m in progress on filming another workshop in my studio, which will be “Anda-mental; an introduction to Andamento.” Andamento is the flow and direction of your tesserae (pieces) and it determines how the eye follows the movement in your artwork, and the energy or mood conveyed. Once I determined there is interest in this topic, I started organizing and planning, and I have filmed a few sessions. However, as I discuss in my blog post (linked above) I am not tech-savvy and most of those sections are upside down. I have since found an app that will flip them, but it takes forever because the files are so large. I don’t have fancy editing software or skills, and my wifi upload speeds are slow, so all of it is tedious. It will take a while before this course goes live. When it does, my plan is to offer it for an affordable fee for streaming, and then to offer some short zoom sessions (1-2 hours) going over the material in-person so I can answer questions and help get you unstuck.

One more thing I added to my shop is one-on-one sessions via zoom. The description and links are in my shop, which is a tab at the top of my website.

So, for now, I highly recommend the online options. I do hope to get back to traveling to teach at some point, but I would be setting myself up for serious stress if I overcommitted at this time. Thank you for understanding!

One more thing: Locals are welcome to visit me in my studio. I am happy to give you a tour of the projects I have on my property and chat with you while I work on commissions. I have some hard-to-get supplies I can sell and I would love to unload scrap glass (free.) I am fairly remote, but only 1/2 hour from the Mud Bay exit in Olympia. It’s a lovely drive, and I would be thrilled to see you!
