Edmonia Lewis was a prominent sculptor in the 1800s. This portrait is in the City of Seattle's permanent collection.

Edmonia Lewis was a Native American / African American sculptor who was prominent in the late 1800s. She was born in the U.S., but spent most of her adult life in Europe. The figure of Edmonia is made of hand-cut stained glass, and the background is composed of images and text under glass giving the viewer a hint of her life and work. The viewer is invited to seek out more information about Edmonia Lewis, and to ask themselves why they haven’t heard of her before.

“Edmonia” is now part of a collection of work purchased by the City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture, and will be on view in Seattle public buildings as part of an ongoing, rotating exhibit.
