As of Oct. 31, almost all hearts have been installed, but grouting is not completed. Still, this is essentially done!

The dedication for the Diversity Mural in Orlando took place on Sept. 21, 2018.

There is a second version of the Diversity Mural in progress for Orlando, FL. For this one, I have partnered with Cherie Bosela, owner of Luna Mosaic Arts, which is located in Orlando, not far from Pulse Nightclub. The concept of this mural design developed out of my own feelings of helplessness and grief after the shooting took place in 2016, and I launched the first version while working with at-risk teens at an alternative high school in Shelton, WA. That mural was just dedicated, two days after the second anniversary of the shooting. The Orlando version of the mural is more of a direct response to this tragic event and in support of the LGBTQIA community. It is even more global, with hearts arriving from all over the world, and it is going to be a lot bigger. 700 hearts are installed as of the dedication, and over 300 more are being prepped to go up in coming months.

Cherie has been doing most of the work on this one, though I’m doing my best to coordinate and fund-raise from the other side of the country. She and more than 30 volunteers have been getting the hearts onto the wall, which is in an area with lots of foot traffic and high-visibility, and this mural is at ground level, serving as a “selfie spot.” Already, people are posting their photos with the mural on Instagram with the hashtag “diversitymural.”

We are using Go Fund Me to raise money to pay for installation costs. Cherie has had to give over her shop, Luna Mosaic Arts, to this project for months now, in addition to devoting her time and energy to managing this effort. Special thanks goes to Laticrete, International for donating top-of-the-line thinset and grout, along with their line of custom tints so that we could grout the project in rainbow colors!
