In June 2017, I spent a weekend at Squalicum Park in Bellingham, WA to create the design for three concrete stanchions located along Maplewood Avenue in the Birchwood neighborhood. Many of the kids in this neighborhood walk this stretch between home and school, and I wanted them to see themselves in the artwork. I rolled out butcher paper and invited kids to draw their own portraits for flower heads, along with any critters they felt should be depicted in a garden. They did a great job, and I spent about 6 months turning the drawings into 30 s.f. of hand-cut mosaic.
