I want to share installation progress on a commission I’ve been busy working on since mid-July. There’s still a small section left to fabricate, but I felt compelled to take advantage of some good weather to get most of it up on the wall. I have about 10 days solid of other commitments, so I won’t be able to finish for a little while, and I’m excited to see how it’s coming together. Aside from the last section, the background will also be an artistic surface treatment by fellow artist Christopher Gerber. So, here’s a sneak peek of the project now, and I’ll be able to show off the completed project in a couple of weeks.
Technical details: This mural is made of hand-cut pieces of stained glass and glass gems, fabricated in sections on fiberglass mesh. This project was initiated in spring, with the design finalized in July. It took 2.5 months to fabricate the actual mural. It will have taken about 3 days to install when it’s done, not including the soycrete background.
For aspiring mosaic artists: I have courses on Mosaic Arts Online demonstrating the techniques I use for this type of work. One is Precision Cutting Stained Glass for Mosaic, which allows me to create the unique shapes seen here. The other course is Professional Mosaic Installation, which covers fabricating mosaic on mesh, but is 2+ hours of detailed information about dos and don’ts and tips and tricks for architectural mosaic. These two courses are now available as a “bundle” where you can purchase them together at a discounted price.
