I hadn’t worked in glass-on-glass in a while, mainly because I’ve been busy with other types of projects. But I really love the effect of glass-on-glass. Many people mistake this for leaded glass, where each piece is cut to fit a pattern, wrapped with foil, then soldered together. I do not do traditional stained glass work. I dislike planning everything ahead of time (numbering pieces and fitting them into a pattern), and I’m terrible at soldering. I have almost zero interest in that. I do usually work from a “cartoon” which is a line drawing. But I decide on my cuts and colors as I go, gluing translucent glass to a clear glass base, then grouting. So all of those dark lines are actually grout.
GOG, as it is often called in the mosaic world, is a more flexible way to work. The artist can use small pieces that art too finicky for leaded glass. And the resulting artwork is sturdy, with one layer of solid glass and another of sheet glass, all held together by a clear adhesive. Still, I’ve had three shipping mishaps with GOG projects, so I stopped making these for sale a few years ago. Then, this winter, I felt the urge to make one for myself again, and I’m on a roll. I would like to make them available for sale, but only for Pacific NW clients/customers. I’m willing to deliver within reason, or meet you part way. It is also an option to have them professionally crated and shipped, but that will need to be incorporated into the cost.
I also make these on custom-cut glass panes or windows that have yet to be installed, so that your contractor can frame them into your home or business.
This technique is so appealing to me because it is sort of magical. When light shines through stained glass, it glows so beautifully, there’s nothing else like it. The artwork changes throughout the day with shifting light, making it feel alive. My favorite is that the colors are cast into the room, adding even more color and light to the space.
Also, if you are a mosaic artist interested in learning how I create these, I have a course on Mosaic Arts Online: https://mosaicartsonline.com/p/precision-cutting-stained-glass-for-mosaic-with-jennifer-kuhns
