Description
This is the first recorded workshop I’ve created myself. In recent years, I’ve flown to Santa Barbara to record professional courses for Mosaic Arts Online (the links are also listed on my workshop page) and I have learned quite a bit about teaching to a camera. That said, unlike MAO, I do not have a recording studio with special lighting and cameras. MAO has professional equipment, Tami has a background in television, and those videos are professionally edited and produced.
I want to offer some beginner-level workshops that are accessible and affordable, so this is a more informal product, shot in my studio with the equipment I’ve been using for Zoom classes over the past year. By pre-recording the class in this way, I can offer it for a low price.
The $50 fee is for the class only, and there is an optional kit I can ship to you.
In this workshop, I explain how I approach a simple geometrical design on a clear glass votive, including some of the tricky challenges. It includes an introductory lesson on cutting glass strips with scoring tools. The video is 1 hr, 20 minutes long and includes grouting.
This project, while beginner level, has some challenging aspects and has to be done in stages. I’ve never taught this one in person because it really can’t be completed in two sessions, so a recorded class is a great solution. I recommend watching the video through first, then going back through step-by-step.
Supplies you will need:
- Clear votive/s (Square ones are great and can be found at craft stores)
- Stained glass (I recommend starting with Spectrum glass because it is very easy to cut. Textured surfaces are more challenging – keep that in mind.)
- Some small format glass tiles from your favorite supplier (My go-tos are Wits End Mosaic and Maryland Mosaics)
- Liquid Nails clear for small projects
- Palette knife or popsicle stick or similar for spreading glue
- cleaning tools
- Glass cutting tools (scoring tool like Toyo cutter and Running Pliers if you want to cut strips / wheeled nippers for shaping)
- Sanded Grout
- Spatula or other spreading tool
- Grout sponge
- Dry erase marker
- Container to mix grout and bucket of water
- Dry, lint-free rags
- Optional: eye protection, glass file, super-fine steel wool
- Space to be messy!
*Note, the optional add-on kit includes some of the harder-to-get items, including adhesive, pre-cut strips of stained glass and recycled glass tiles. If you order the kit, I’ll check with you about color selection. I also have wheeled nippers available. Unfortunately, I do not have scoring tools for sale at this time.
