Last fall, Carrie Ziegler and I had a brainstorming session to discuss submitting to public art opportunities as a team. The challenge is that juries and committees are reluctant to choose teams without examples showing how their work and skills combine. So, we decided to create a modest example of how ferrocement and mosaic are like peanut butter and chocolate. Carrie’s partner, Shon Forsythe, designed the sculpture and the two of them fabricated it. I came in at the end and added stained glass mosaic elements, and Carrie helped with that as well. It was a great experience to work with other artists, bouncing ideas off each other.
Update: There were some technical glitches with the voting process that took place in August. The City has a new link and is starting the whole vote over with a new link. Unfortunately, they are now requiring that everyone create an account and sign in to cast a vote. I hope some of you are willing to take the extra steps to weigh in. Thanks to everyone who voted, and especially to those intrepid voters who set up an account and vote in October!
Our sculpture, “Growing Love,” was selected to be displayed on Percival Landing in Olympia, WA through the year, and is now one of many options to be purchased for the City’s permanent collection.
