Art is a doorway.
We step through these portals we create in order to share our histories, investigate the present and our presence, and imagine a multitude of possible—and impossible—futures. They are pathways to places where we are free to celebrate, struggle, mourn, exalt, and explore freely.
As artists working within and beyond the boundaries
of the mosaic tradition, we architect our portals from line, gesture, space, rhythm and texture, using materials mundane and precious —cast off tiles, broken pottery, foraged metal and stone; marble, porcelain, glass, gold.
The cycle of producing and experiencing creative work has never been more urgent or more necessary. In this period of disruption, isolation and uncertainty, art has done the one thing we needed most—the one thing it always does—transport us to other times, places, and perspectives.
The Cascadia Mosaic Collective is a group of 10 Pacific NW Mosaic artists who have joined forces to offer mutual support, collaboration and to exhibit artwork together. Initially, we called ourselves the Northwest Mosaic Art Alliance, exhibiting together under this moniker five times prior to 2022. In January 2022, we were awarded a group residency at Centrum in Port Townsend, which gave us an opportunity to spend an entire week creating side by side in a large studio space, witness each other’s processes, and to delve into deep conversation about our work. Some of the artwork created during that week is now on the walls of the Washington Center Gallery in Olympia (512 Washington St.) through June 26., 2022.
