SUMMARY:The Business Side - A webinar with Jennifer Kuhns / JK Mosaic
DESCRIPTION:This will be a virtual\, interactive webinar event covering the business side of mosaic (much of which will apply to any commission-based art or architecturally installed art.) During the first half hour or so\, I’ll describe my own journey\, from being an arts & crafts hobbyist who sold things sporadically through building a full-time business as an artist working primarily in mosaic. My personal story will include trials and tribulations\, challenges and solutions\, and the reasons for various shifts that brought me to this point in my career. \nThe second part will get into more nuts & bolts of good business practices\, and then Q&A from participants. I’ll address pricing\, insurance\, estimates and invoicing\, networking\, professionalism\, finding clients/projects\, etc. If you are a hobbyist considering whether to launch a serious business or are actively working on commissions but feeling lost about how to become profitable\, this may be a good opportunity for you. \nEach artist’s journey is unique\, and I do not consider myself an expert at business. In fact\, it was never my skill set. Hopefully\, it will be helpful to hear how I’ve managed to get this far despite having a scattered artist brain\, poor organizational skills\, and social anxiety because I am still wrapping my own head around it. For this reason\, I am presenting a webinar instead of a workshop\, and I’m charging a small fee just to encourage commitment from participants and because I value my time. Also\, I see this as a practice and test to see how well it is received\, and I’ll welcome feedback on what was useful and what was missing\, after the event. \n*I want the Q&A to be participatory so that I can answer questions\, and we can also brainstorm together if questions come up that I don’t have the answers to. I also want to record the session so that it can be viewed at a later time for those who can’t attend. This is just a heads-up that it will be recorded\, and you can keep your video off if you are not comfortable appearing on screen. Also: I plan to use Google Meet because I’m no longer subscribed to Zoom. I will share the link with you after you sign up. To clarify: the event is October 14\, 1-3pm Pacific Time. *People outside of the U.S. are welcome to join\, but I am concerned that lot of the information will be specific to the U.S. and I wouldn’t be able to address questions about licensing\, insurance\, finding and applying for projects\, etc. in other countries. \nI look forward to seeing people on my screen – it has been a long time! \nHere is the link in my shop to enroll in this event: https://jkmosaic.com/product/the-business-side-a-webinar-on-10-14-22-at-1pm-pst/

SUMMARY:Mosaic Installation Techniques Workshop -June 12-14
DESCRIPTION:Installation Techniques (Mosaic on Mesh)\, June 13-15 starting at 10am\, scheduled until noon each day. *I will present the most important info in the beginning\, and by the second hour\, we may just be working on our projects. It will take you many hours to complete the mosaic for the first step\, which is vital for the second day’s lesson. So\, we’ll continue working after the zoom meeting is over\, but it won’t be necessary to remain on the meeting once your mosaic is in progress. The second and third sessions will take less time.\n \n  \nI use this technique regularly in order to create the work in my studio for installation in other locations. Students will make an 8″ square mosaic during the first session\, then pre-grout during a second session\, and will transfer to a substrate during a third session. Each step requires time for the cement to cure\, so we’ll need to have live sessions with down time in between. During sessions\, I’ll walk you through the process\, and I’ll talk about some of the different challenges I’ve faced with various installations. \n*For this version of the class\, I may install my demo piece directly on an exterior wall of my studio to show a vertical installation. You are welcome to install on any cement surface you have available as well. In my first version of this workshop\, Angie Heinrich installed her project onto her concrete stoop with her phone propped up next to her so we were all able to see her process. It worked out great. \nI am assembling materials kits that I will list as a separate item. If you have the supplies at home\, you won’t need to purchase a kit. Here’s what you’ll need: \n\nfiberglass mesh -8″ x 8″\nthinset\ntesserae of your choice\na stiff board\, 8″ x 8″ or larger\nClear plastic\, can be a ziplock bag. (Not saran wrap or wax paper.)\nmarginal trowel\nnotched trowel\nSpreader for thinset (palette knife or similar)\ncontainers for mixing thinset and grout\ngrout\ngrouting sponge\ndry lint-free rags\nspatula or grouting squeegee of your choice\ngloves for grouting\nwater\n8″ x 8″ pattern\n8″ x 8″ substrate (tile board like hardi\, wedi\, durock\, etc.)\ncutting tools of your choice in keeping with your materials\n\nOptional: something to mark cuts on your tesserae\, safety goggles\, dust mask for mixing thinset/grout. \nIf you need to order a kit\, please do so asap so that I can get in sent off to you right away. Plan for it to take several hours to complete your square. \nDeadline for ordering the supply kit is June 5 if you are not on the West Coast.    June 9 for Oregon and WA. Also\, you may pick up a kit from me if you are local to Olympia\, WA or East Grays Harbor County. \n  \n  \nInstallation Kit\nThese are the supplies I have to mail out as a kit to accompany the Installation Techniques workshop. They include: \n8″ x 8″ fiberglass mesh\n2 lb Laticrete Platinum 254 thinset (white)\nmarginal trowel\nnotched trowel\ndry erase marker (for marking cuts)\npopsicle stick for mixing & spreading as needed\n1/4 grout sponge\nsuperfine steel wool\nSanded grout\, in a color based on availability.\n*If you need glass or tile\, I have a listing for that in the supplies section. \n*I have listed wheeled glass nippers separately for those who need them. \nSupply kit is $25 plus shipping: $15= $40 \n*Unfortunately\, I’m not able to include the substrate in the kit because I don’t have that on hand. You will need your own 8″ x 8″ tile board: hardi\, wedi\, durock or similar. Wits End Mosaic has perfect ready-to-hang tile board and has offered a discount for my students\, plus lots of other tools and supplies. When you sign up\, I’ll send you the code. *Does not include: substrate\, dust mask\, grout gloves (if you need some\, let me know)\, tesserae\, stiff board\, cutting tools.

SUMMARY:Booster Class for Precision Cutting Stained Glass for Mosaic
DESCRIPTION:This is a zoom class for students who have already taken the Precision Cutting Stained Glass for Mosaic workshop\, either in person or from Mosaic Arts Online\, but are looking for extra instruction to address continuing challenges. Please note that this is not for students new to glass cutting. I’ll take students who didn’t take the workshop from me\, but have their own tools and basic cutting skills. But I’ll be jumping straight into more advanced technique\, so a beginner would likely be lost. \nWe’ll review skinny strips\, undulating curves\, concave scores\, circles\, teardrops and crescents. I’ll demonstrate when and how I cut more difficult glass\, and when I just use it for other types of andamento. \nYou will need a selection of glass in 6″ sections or larger\, and I’ll post some glass packs for sale in case you need practice glass. You will also need a scoring tool (I like Toyo cutters\, the model is up to you)\, running pliers (I prefer metal ones) and breaker-groziers (I recommend the ones with flat ends; not tapered.) Ideally\, you will have two sets of running pliers. \nThis is a technique class and there won’t be a project\, though you’re welcome to work on a personal project during class. \nIf you are looking for beginner level instruction on this type of glass cutting\, consider registering for the Precision Cutting Stained Glass for Mosaic workshop through Mosaic Arts Online. \nMy studio\nStudent work from the Glass on Glass/Precision Cutting Mosaic workshop.\nGlass on Glass mosaic made in a workshop using the precision cutting (Opus Sectile) method.\n*If wi-fi will allow\, I’ll take the camera to my studio and demo use of the Ring Saw.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Glass on Glass Mosaic - May 23 and 30
DESCRIPTION:Often referred ot as “GOG”\, glass-on-glass mosaic is translucent stained glass adhered to clear glass with clear adhesive\, so light shines through\, achieving a similar effect to leaded glass\, but allowing for more fluidity\, spontaneity and detail. \nGOG mosaic is very versatile. It can be applied to reclaimed windows and picture frames\, used as suncatchers and privacy screens\, or can be used on glass vessels and other objects\, like glass vases and votives\, and can be used indoors or out. \nPeacock mosaic by JK Mosaic\nDuring this workshop\, students will complete an 8″ x 10″ mosaic on a glass pane. I have a kit prepared to ship out (find as a separate item) containing a new 8 x 10 photo frame\, a tube of adhesive\, popsicle sticks for spreading glue\, wheeled glass nippers and grout\, and about 2 lbs of scrap glass. Students will need a spatula or other grouting tool\, rubber gloves\, dust mask (your handy covid mask will work)\, dry rags\, some containers for mixing grout and water for cleanup\, two small eye-screws for hanging\, and a space where you can make a mess. You may want to order extra glass to be able to complete a specific design and to make mistakes and play. I can send some resources for purchasing glass\, and if you need a pattern\, I’ll send a few simple designs to choose from. *It is not necessary to purchase a kit if you already have many of the items or can source them locally\, but touch bases with me to get a checklist. \nGlass on glass mosaic privacy screen for a massage office.\nWe’ll meet on the 23rd from 10am to noon and go over the steps for creating glass-on-glass mosaic. We’ll work together until the steps are clear\, but by noon students will likely be ready to continue working on your own at your own pace. I scheduled the final step\, grouting\, for the following Saturday so that students can work at a leisurely pace\, taking as long as necessary\, and we can touch bases as necessary. Then\, on the 30th\, we’ll have another session\, and will grout our projects\, which can then be inserted back into the frames. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Andamento\, 4 classes: May 6-27
DESCRIPTION:This is registration for all four sessions of the Intro to Andamento series that will take place via Zoom on Wednesdays at 11am\, beginning on May 6\, continuing the 13th\, 20th and 27th at 10am. \nMay 6\, Session 1 will be an overview. I have a slideshow ready that will cover the basics of various approaches to andamento. If there’s time\, we may start exploring keystoning after the slideshow. There will be no hands-on mosaic\, but a sketchbook could be handy. \nMay 13th\, Session 2 will review keystoning\, and students will be encouraged to do more sketching\, then to use paper to cut and practice keystoning. Construction paper is great\, but whatever you have on hand that will contrast with whatever is behind it will work. We will also talk about Sdoppiomento. \nMay 20th\, Session 3 will address irregular grammar: a common contemporary way of using quadrangles to create a grid that is not continuous. Once you get it down\, it’s a fun\, easy way to fill a space that has a sort of MidCentury Modern look. If it makes sense\, we’ll start talking about radiating\, which is a kind of marriage of irregular grammar and extended keystoning. Again\, students will sketch and can use cut paper to practice the techniques. \nMay 27th\, Session 4 will follow up on radiating\, and move into ways to use irregular grammar that undulates and wraps around shapes. And we’ll follow up on other andamento topics that may have come up throughout the conversation\, or that students are specifically drawn to. \nYou can see how the pieces are carefully cut and placed for a radiating effect. \n \nDesign by Marco Hernandez / Mosaic by Jennifer Kuhns\n \nStained glass mosaic on kerdi board\, framed.
