Introduction to Andamento, 4 classes: May 6-27
May 6, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
$100This is registration for all four sessions of the Intro to Andamento series that will take place via Zoom on Wednesdays at 11am, beginning on May 6, continuing the 13th, 20th and 27th at 10am.
May 6, Session 1 will be an overview. I have a slideshow ready that will cover the basics of various approaches to andamento. If there’s time, we may start exploring keystoning after the slideshow. There will be no hands-on mosaic, but a sketchbook could be handy.
May 13th, Session 2 will review keystoning, and students will be encouraged to do more sketching, then to use paper to cut and practice keystoning. Construction paper is great, but whatever you have on hand that will contrast with whatever is behind it will work. We will also talk about Sdoppiomento.
May 20th, Session 3 will address irregular grammar: a common contemporary way of using quadrangles to create a grid that is not continuous. Once you get it down, it’s a fun, easy way to fill a space that has a sort of MidCentury Modern look. If it makes sense, we’ll start talking about radiating, which is a kind of marriage of irregular grammar and extended keystoning. Again, students will sketch and can use cut paper to practice the techniques.
May 27th, Session 4 will follow up on radiating, and move into ways to use irregular grammar that undulates and wraps around shapes. And we’ll follow up on other andamento topics that may have come up throughout the conversation, or that students are specifically drawn to.
You can see how the pieces are carefully cut and placed for a radiating effect.
