In 2009, I was commissioned to create a mosaic feature for Lawton Elementary School in Seattle, WA. I worked with the artist-in-residence, who had the kids draw scenes from life at and around the school. Then I spent the better part of a year turning selected drawings (one from each of the 18 classrooms, mainly chosen based on whether the design could be fairly easily translated into glass) into mosaic. The designers ranged in age from kindergarten through 4th grade, and the project was installed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school.
